Fab Fete : Haute Halloween Decor and F&B

Designing and creating food stations, beverage bars, and dessert bars has always been a fun, creative outlet for me.  Professionally, I planned and executed them for various luxury brands at Saks as well as for Moroccanoil at NY Fashion Week as part of a larger event marketing effort.  Personally, I’ve planned them for friend’s baby showers and my daughter’s birthday.  Staking out a location is always step #1.  When I saw this bright orange wall at Gymboree, I knew it would be the perfect Haute Halloween backdrop.  food station

I opted for the wall along the hallway without the hooks so that I could have a blank slate from which to work upon.  And I pressed 2 smaller, 4’x5′ tables together to provide ample room for pizza, beverages, snacks and dessert.  I was working off a tight budget so nothing here was custom made like I’d usually do for other parties.  All the paper products were surprisingly found at the local Party City.  Pretty impressive for Party City, huh?  IMG_3646

I just had to create the banner, tape it up, rest my black velvet fabric and tape up the edges with black electrical tape and throw a striped fabric down the middle making sure everything touched the floor.  You never want to see the legs on a table unless they are very decorative and match your design theme.  A benefit for having your linens touch the floor is creating needed storage space.  Tuck all your replenishable foods /snacks and take-home boxes underneath for easy access.   I loved the banner because you could still give it a customized look with the stickered letters that came along with it.  I wrote Haute Halloween for this food staion, and used another one saying @fab_kids in the photo room.  IMG_3654The white pillared cake stands were topped with orange paper to add some additional contrast to the table and make the mini cupcakes pop.  All the mini cupcakes were sponsored by Baked by Melissa and were soooo scrumptious!  And I had already bought the cake stands for another event.  These can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond.

It’s nice to be able to have some detail both behind the food station wall as well as in front of it.  So I brought the black/white/orange decor theme in with the handmade chain banner below which helped to tie the whole look in.  The sodas were canistered in these simple containers, also purchased at Party City and were labeled “venom” and “poison” to go with the Halloween theme.IMG_3650

The napkins and leftover goody bag spiders continued the black / white / orange theme down to the very last detail.IMG_3651 IMG_3652 GoGo SqeeZ sponsored our applesauce snacks and were a popular hit amongst our costumed crowd.

We also had pumpkin – shaped pretzels, cookies and fruity chews.  Guests dined in a separate room, formerly the art room.

Goody bags and sponsored beverages, Trimino and Green Mustache were also stationed here.

The photo area had a simple backdrop using the same banner found at the food station.  It read @fab_kids so that the brand would show up in everyone’s photos.

The chalk hashtag unfortunately did not stay on long but guests were asked to hashtag #fabkidsandtheirstylishmoms (our FB page name) on any of their Instagram uploads.

Once they tagged that and the venue @gymboreenewyork, they’d immediately be entered to win VIP tickets to Gymboree’s upcoming Thanksgrooving disco party.  Congrats to Kye who dressed up as Robin Thicke and won these tickets!!

Fab Kids : Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Andre Leon Talley Baby Costumes

IMG_0900[1]

I figured this may be the last year that Juliet would let me dress her for Halloween so I wanted to have some fun with it.  Through the Fab Kids and Their Stylish Moms Facebook network and my following on Instagram @fab_kids, I threw (and sold out) an Haute Halloween themed costume party where kids (mostly toddlers) were encouraged to dress as their fashion icon.  Being that I…er I mean Juliet adores Anna Wintour, I started scheming months ahead to put together a Vogue triplet team consisting of (Asian) Anna Wintour, a Karl Lagerfeld and Andre Leon Talley.   Here was my inspirational shot that led me to this crafty planning.

Obviously these costumes are more for the fashion-obsessed parents than they are for the cute toddlers. But what fashionista wouldn’t go gaga over these images?  Off to work I went finding mini Anna Wintour’s outfit.  I knew I wanted her to carry a Vogue magazine so I pulled out my signed September issue from Fashion’s Night Out and made a miniature copy, half the size of the actual magazine.   Tip – make two color copies and glue them 1 on each side to a piece of cardboard (I made a cut out from a box to make it super sturdy). That way, no matter which way the toddler carries it, it won’t bend, and will always show the front cover.

Pictured here are also some Anna – like jewels (that my husband mistakenly removed from baby before arriving to the party argh!)

Here is Anna with her signature jewels. Pretty nice match for just $1 a necklace, right?

andre leon talley anna wintourI’m still so mad that I never got to get pictures with Juliet wearing them…   Here’s the rest of Juliet’s mini-Anna look without the dollar store black sunglasses that I had her wear.

I found the tweed Cream and gold fleck cardigan at Zara  – so Chanel – looking!  And I couldn’t resist buying a matching sz 13/14 for me to wear with her.  The tweed ballet shoes are from Old Navy and the skirt is from Target.  I did scour the web (for months) for the perfect Anna wig but I simply could not find anything similar at or near her size.  In the end, I gave an adult sized wig an Anna haircut but there was no way this toddler was going to keep it on.  So I reluctantly wore it myself and bought myself a Vogue tee to wear under the Zara cardigan.

Days before when I had given up on her ever wearing the wig, I bought her her very first real haircut and felt defeated not being able to find any way to color her hair Anna’s blondish brown (without actually having to permanently color her hair).  You should have seen the stylist’s face when I asked him to make Juliet look like the picture of Anna that I brought in.

Juliet was so enthralled with the whole hair cutting process that she sat patiently and as still as any determined minifashionista would.

Karl Lagerfeld’s signature look was easier to replicate.  All you really need are a:

  • Chanel shopping bag
  • White cat
  • black suit
  • brooch and/or necklaces
  • and a children’s white wig
  • black sunglasses

Juliet’s friend, Mosi got it spot ON!

One little trick to keep a kid-sized wig on a toddler is to add an elastic band under the chin.  You can barely see it here but it allowed for Karl to run around music class without ever shifting his perfect platinum hair! IMG_1717

Did you notice his CC shoes?  They actually say “Chanel on the inside.  Fab!!  You can get some just like these here.

Speaking of fab, it doesn’t get more fab than Andre Leon Talley, editor-at-large of Vogue Magazine.  He’s stately, he’s acessorized to the nines and he commands attention everywhere his giant fur-caped self goes.

Andre Leon Talley’s costume should include:

  • a cape
  • fur
  • necklaces
  • grey hair
  • a fab suit
  • Vogue magazine

Our little Andre refused to wear his fur cape but kept the rest of his accessories on including a Chanel brooch!  His shoes came off for dancing…

And finally, our little Vogue trio together.  What do you think?
