4 Toy-Inspired DIY Kids’ Costumes

I believe in recycling and re-using what you have and the same philosophy comes up during Halloween when I’m preparing costumes for our endless series of special events.  See my last post about 8 easy DIY Costumes from last year here as an example!  This year, I took a slightly different approach and let Juliet”s favorite toys serve as the inspiration to all our make-at-home costumes.  They were so fun to create with her and for her.  See below for some costume inspiration and let me know what you think you could create at home with what you already have!

  • Baby Momma.  Does your doll love dolls?  Make her a mommy this year!  With an infinity scarf, I made her a makeshift baby carrier and stuffed her Water Baby in there.  Props could include, a (plastic) wine glass (I filled our with sparkling water), a Starbucks cup, a cellphone, a stroller, baby bottle, purse and kitchen accessories!  We glammed her up as a fab mom but you could easily do the stressed out mom look and opt for a more disheveled tee shirt and leggings paired with some under-eye circles and messy hair lol! diy costumes, costume ideas for kids, kids' costumes, halloween costumes for kids, halloween costume ideas, best kids' costume ideas
  • Beautician.  If your daughter is like mine, she is obsessed with anything beauty-related.  Here she is making over Barbie’s hair, make-up and nails.  The Barbie hair styling bust came in handy for this photo opp (as well as for our recent Barbie-themed play date read more here.  You could however, easily use any long-haired doll, play make-up, or an apron filled with tools (ours was from Melissa & Doug).
  • Veterinarian.  Do you have a doctor’s set and some stuffed animals?  It’s easy to re-create this doctor’s costume with a button down shirt, glasses, a cute stuffed animal and doctor’s tools (stethoscope, thermometer, bandaids, suckers, etc).  My friend made this lab coat and gave it to us as a hand-me-down and it completed the costume!!  BTW, if you haven’t already heard of Parker, you’ve got to check him out! While he looks like your classic, cuddly teddy bear, he actually digitally interacts with an app for an immersive, augmented reality experience!  We live in the future, I tell you!kids' doctor costume, doctor costume, dr. costume, halloween costume ideas for kids, diy kids' costumes
  • Rock Star.  Encourage your kid to rock on with his/her favorite musical instrument of choice and/or a microphone.  Get flashy with the outfit, and have fun!  I gave Juliet’ an 80’s rocker look with MY fishnet stockings, hair in a side ponytail, a bright neon dress, toy guitar and sunglasses.  Must have sunglasses.

Thanks to the toy sponsors who sent us the beloved toys!  Follow us on IG and watch our IG stories to see the toys in action!

Kid Things Styled and Reviewed

Who doesn’t love little girls’ fashions?  These days, there are so many fantastic options for every type of minifashionista.  But for some, that selection is overwhelming and they need assistance sorting through everything and then figuring out how to style it all.  That’s where Kid Things comes in.  Read all about the process of working with them via text on my prior post.   They basically save busy moms the time and effort it takes to manage their little ones’ wardrobe needs helping to navigate brands, keep up with growth spurts, and prepare for changing seasons and occasions.  I tried out their service and was happy with the selections, quick shipment time and friendly service.

Featured here are the preppy striped whale shorts from Vineyard Vines that I styled with items already in our closet.  This is a classic piece that I can see her wearing all summer long, perfect for all our New England adventures.

I also made sure to request some casual, easy summer dresses because in the past year, my minifashionista has developed such a penchant for wearing dresses that is nearly impossible for me to convince her to wear much of anything else.  But most of her dresses are for fancier occasions, not for the playground and everyday.  Kid Things came to the rescue with this super comfy striped number by preppy brand, Busy Bees.  I styled it with colorful stacked bracelets, beaded necklaces, a pom pom gladiator found from an online sample sale, and a floppy pink hat to match.  She loved it.

The other dress I fell in love with was this graphic printed tank dress by Nui.  It’s organic cotton, was super soft to the touch and I loved the modern look.  This dress can easily play on the slide and then transition into a going out piece with the right accessories too.

Next up came this ruffle navy sleeveless top which is sure to be a summer go-to piece given that it can match with so many items in J’s wardrobe.  I can see it layered under rompers and dresses, to being paired with skirts, jeans and shorts as pictured above.  It’s by a premium brand, Splendid which is known for its easy breezy, carefree pieces.  (Don’t you just love how my little one hams it up for the camera??)

Lastly, this cotton drawstring dress screamed summer with its ice cream print and I just couldn’t resist.  Molo is the designer of this dress and I paired it with a hand-me down cardigan, MY headband from the Gossip Girl days (now hers), and sample sale gladiator sandals.  We plan to host an ice cream social this summer in this dress and it looks like J is ready!

Overall, there were some really cute pieces that introduced me to great new brands.  My minifashionista’s closet is fully prepared for our spring / summer needs and it was a true pleasure working with my Kid Things personal stylist who helped shop the pieces with me. Thank you to Kid Things who granted us a complimentary trial!  What outfit was YOUR favorite??
