Insider Secrets To Saving Money on NYC Broadway Shows

New York City is renowned for its vibrant theater scene, with Broadway shows attracting millions of visitors each year. However, admission is pricey and combined with New York’s notoriously high costs, any tips on saving are appreciated. Read on because as a New Yorker who has lived in the area for 21 years, I’ve compiled all the little known ways to see shows without breaking the bank and I’m about to share ALL the insider tips!

1).Same day tickets 

Ask for “rush” tickets the day of the show that you want to see. New York New York tickets at 2nd row for instance were recently purchased for $30 . Normally rush tickets range from $30-$50. You’ll want to check out this link which has the policies for each show as they all vary.  If you’re spontaneous and flexible, there are a couple great ways to score last minute deals the day of! Download and use the TodayTix app for last minute unused ticket deals! OR head to a TKTS Booth (in Times Square, Lincoln Center, and Downtown Brooklyn), these booths offer same-day tickets at up to 50% off the regular price. (The Times Square line will be the longest). Or you could join TDF and visit their website to see what offers they have for advance sale.  Arriving early and being flexible with your show selection can increase your chances of finding great deals. Pro tip- download the TKTS app to find out what tickets are avail that day before you even arrive!

2). Save on ticket fees

which can really add up by skipping Ticketmaster and Telecharge charges and by going directly to the theater box office and paying directly. Wednesdays are the best days to try this because there are usually 2 shows and weekdays are less popular than weekends.

3). Sign up for the deals.

Websites like TodayTix, BroadwayBox, Rush.telecharge.com, Broadway direct, Social Toaster, Playbill.com and Goldstar regularly feature exclusive deals and promotions. Sign up for their newsletters or follow them on social media to stay updated on the latest offers. 

4). Enter a digital lottery.

I have friends who’ve done this daily and have scored coveted Hamilton tickets for $10 each! Click here! You have to be in it to win it as they say! Lucky seat is a digital lottery that allows you to play to win tickets for the next week instead of the day of.  Rush.telecharge.com for Broadway Lottery tickets. Also Broadway Direct has some Broadway show lotteries as well as Social Toaster.
Look at TodayTix but their fees are getting higher and the seats not great.

5).Midweek and Matinee Performances:

Attending shows during less popular times can lead to substantial savings. Midweek performances, especially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, tend to have lower demand, resulting in discounted tickets. Matinee performances, typically held on Wednesdays and weekends, also offer reduced prices.

6).  Student and Military Discounts:

If you’re a student or a member of the military, take advantage of the special discounts offered by various theaters. The TIX4STUDENTS program provides discounted tickets to students as does the check the Theatre Development Fund (TDF). 7).  Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway Shows

While Broadway shows are the epitome of New York theater, don’t overlook the incredible productions happening off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway. These shows often offer more affordable ticket prices while still delivering exceptional performances. Check out venues like The Public Theater, Signature Theatre, and St. Ann’s Warehouse for a diverse range of shows.
